How to Make Tear Bears for Scrapbooks and other crafts
Scrapbooking has been around for a long time now but its popularity is just now really taking off. One of the most common new techniques in scrapbooking is called Tearing. I am going to introduce you to the tearing technique of making tear animals. The most common animal made from this technique is bears but is only limited to your imagination.
First there are a few supplies that you will need before we are able to start. The supplies are as follows along with what they will be used for:
1.) Tear Pattern ~ this is the pattern that you want to create your animal from
2.) Handmade Mulberry Paper ~ the thicker bumpy kind that has ripples, you can’t use the this see though mulberry paper OR Bazzill cardstock ~ needs to be the thick textured paper
3.) A thin paint brush or Q-tips ~ will be used on outline as well for chalking
4.) Chalk ~ will be used for checks and any shading
5.) Black Micron Pigma Pen ~ to draw eyes, eye lashes, freckles, etc
6.) White Gel Pen ~ to add the white gleam in the animal’s eyes and on the nose
7.) Black Cardstock ~ to be used if you decide to punch out eyes and noses
8.) Oval or Tear Paper Punch ~ to use with black cardstock to make the eyes)
9.) Paw Paper Punch ~ to use with black cardstock for nose
10.) Double sided Mounting Tape or Glue Stick ~ to hold pieces together
Once you have the supplies together you are ready to begin. Start by cutting out the pattern you chose. If you do not have a pattern then you can draw one. Just create it to the size that you want the bear to be and cut it out. Then trace the pattern pieces onto the back of the mulberry paper or bazzill cardstock making sure each piece of the body is separate and not to close to another piece. Use the paint brush or q-tip and re-trace the pattern with water. You need to make sure that you are pushing hard enough so the water will to go all the way though the paper. It is ok if you used too much water but it will be hard to tear if you don’t use enough water. After your re-trace is complete pick up the paper and hold it tight and pull or tear the pattern. It is best to go slow so that you have more control and stay close to the pattern shape. After you have torn out the complete bear lay each piece flat and let it dry.
Once the pieces are dry it is time to put the pieces together and decorate him. Add chalk to the outside edges to give it more character and definition. Next either use the black pigma pen to draw eyes and a nose on the muzzle or use the punches and punch out the eyes and nose from the black cardstock. Use the black pigma pen to draw eyebrows and use chalk for the cheeks. If you punched out the eyes and the nose then use the white gel pen to draw the white gleam. All is left is to position the bear into the position of your choice and then adhere the pieces together using the glue stick or the double sided mounting tape. Be creative when you position your bear. You can make him sit, lie down, stand up, hold an item, or even peak over the side or corner of something. You can also bring more personality into the animal by just simply tilting the head. You can also choose to add an outfit, or even just a hat or a bow or two!
You have just completed your first torn teddy bear! From here you can start over with another bear or use your imagination and create other animals. Don’t get discouraged if your first tear bear doesn’t turn out the way you expected. This technique takes practice. The more you make the quicker and the more skillful they will turn out.
